Urban development

Gothenburg is developing economically, socially and environmentally.

Gothenburg is evolving

Gothenburg is growing dramatically at the moment and is preparing to make space for almost 700,000 residents by the year 2035 – that’s 150,000 more than today. This also means that Gothenburg is evolving. New houses are being built, and new residential areas and city districts are emerging on land previously used for industrial purposes. New roads, bridges, cycle paths and expanded public transport will make it easier to get around in the city, both for private individuals and the business sector. Gothenburg will go from being a large town, to a green and close city, where nothing is far away.

More on this subject
Effective, safe and sustainable transport and space for people and business in a thriving, forward-looking city – a city on the move.
The West Swedish Agreement allows the Region to expand sustainably. It is one of the largest investments ever in public transport systems, such as roads, railways and cycle paths. This will result in a region where residents have a greater choice in where they live and work. It will make new areas accessible for commuting both for work and studying. Residents and visitors alike will have enhanced accessibility to the Region’s coastline, countryside as well as a host of entertainment, leisure and cultural amenities. Thus enhancing quality of life for all.
