Making space for more people
Gothenburg is growing dramatically at the moment and is preparing to make space for almost 700,000 residents by the year 2035 – that’s 150,000 more than today. This also means that Gothenburg is evolving. New houses are being built, and new residential areas and city districts are emerging on land previously used for industrial purposes. New roads, bridges, cycle paths and expanded public transport will make it easier to get around in the city, both for private individuals and the business sector. 15,000 new homes will be built in the new Älvstaden area, which encompasses large parts of central Gothenburg on both sides of the Göta River. Forecasts suggest we may also have 80,000 more jobs in Gothenburg in 2035.
